First put the sink stopper back in the hole.
Sink stopper pull rod came out.
On a bathroom sink it s often necessary to remove the retaining nut and extract the pivot rod first.
They come with a lift rod and linkage.
Pull the pivot rod backward releasing the sink stopper some water will come out then pull up the stopper.
A sink stopper mechanism isn t difficult to understand.
The advantage is that the stopper is pulled tightly into the drain when closed.
When the nut is tightened reattach the rod to the strap using the clip that you removed earlier.
And i m reluctant to pull out the stopper because i don t want to deal with trying to.
A sink stopper with a push pull rod control at the faucet is a great modern convenience.
Undo the screw to unfasten the lift rod then pull the lift rod out from above the sink.
The lever hooks onto the stopper through a hole or hook on the bottom of a long plastic flange that s attached to the stopper.
Remove the rod from the sink stopper and set it aside.
Loosen the nut holding the pivot rod to the tailpiece using pliers.
Because the extension bar and lift rod are adjustable that s what the clevis the holes in the extension bar and the spring clamp are for you may be able to keep them in place and reuse them with other new or repaired components of the sink stopper.
When this is done come out from under the sink to test the stopper.
This will free up the rod leading to the sink stopper.
If you want to remove the assembly you may be able to pull it right out.
The disadvantage is that cleaning the stopper and the drain is a little more difficult.
With the stopper and pivot rod out of the way you have full access to the tailpiece and can clean it thoroughly with the hooked wire.
When you push or pull on the lift rod it activates a lever the extends through the drain tailpiece.
Often you can buy the linkage rod with ball and a stopper without buying the whole pop up assembly.
Pull out the horizontal pivot arm and the stopper will be free.
Loosen the retaining nut that holds the horizontal pivot rod in place.
Pushing the knob and the lift rod down causes the pivot rod to push the stopper up.
Pulling the knob causes the pivot rod to pull the stopper down.
Next go under the sink and screw the nut back into place tightening again with the wrench or pliers as required.
Then go back to the clip and squeeze the ends together.
Move everything from under the sink so you have room to work.
But sink stoppers fail.
Climb out from under the cabinet remove the sink.
Check to see that the horizontal pivot rod is connected to the clevis.
Locate the plunger rod coming down from the back of the faucet.
In the days before pop up drains a rubber stopper was employed when you wanted a sink full of water to rinse out a few things.
This will allow you to push the plunger rod out.
To remove the stopper you must first go under the sink and completely loosen the pivot nut see previous question.
Remove the horizontal pivot rod from the drainpipe.
